As with other learned behaviors, it helps to watch for signs of the daily duty and enforce and direct them with a voice command followed by praise. The technique has a couple of downsides however. Unlike cats, dogs will rarely eliminate in a perfumed litter box. Newspapers (even with the top layer removed after the dog goes) will eventually create an unpleasant smell in the house.
Also, long before the odor becomes noticeable to humans, dogs can smell their own distinctive aroma. Dogs don’t find the smell unattractive – quite the opposite. And that’s the problem.
Dogs that are paper trained will often prefer to eliminate indoors. Sometimes your puppy may miss the paper by just a little bit, resulting in a mess to clean up.
Once the scent is in the carpet, the dog will continue to seek that spot out as its proper ‘place to go’. This makes training the dog to eliminate outside even more difficult. Best to suffer a few accidents than to create a hard-to-overcome habit.

Know your pups schedule and use it to your advantage. Do they get up and prefer to eat right away? If so, right after eating, take them outside to urinate.

This means not only during the day but also at night.

Training a sporting dog to hunt is something that is entirely up to the owner. Most dogs of the breed will naturally use some aspects of their behavior in everyday activities. Pointers and setters may naturally point or indicate birds or even farmyard chickens or ducks even without any formal training. Spaniels and retrievers tend to excel at games such as fetch or even Frisbee even though they may have had little training.
If you are considering training your sporting dog for competitions consider joining a sporting dog group or organization and attend field trials or events to learn about this sport. These dogs require positive training and do not do well with harsh or punishment based methods. While a dog pen or cage can be used for crate training it isn’t a house training method but only a tool. Crate Training is a way to keep control of your pet whenever you aren’t able to keep a watchful eye on them. This includes not only during the day but also night time as well.
